Barry Mitzman

One of the Northwest's best-known journalists, Barry Mitzman served as host of PBS/KCTS' Serious Money, a weekly television series on regional business and investment trends, for over 12 years. Tens of thousands of fans have looked to Barry for helpful ideas on personal finance, insightful perspective on the economy, and especially for his revealing, in-depth interviews.

His guests have included many national newsmakers such as Intel chairman Andy Grove and Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, as well as CEOs of most of the Northwest's largest public companies, from Bill Gates (Microsoft) and Phil Condit (Boeing) to Kerry Killinger (Washington Mutual.

Barry is widely in demand at meetings and conventions as a public speaker, moderator, and master of ceremonies. His speaking clients include Intel, BankAmerica, Frank Russell Trust, U.S. Senator Patty Murray and the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association.

In his nearly two decades in television, Barry has been a reporter, producer, and executive producer of many documentaries and news specials that have garnered numerous awards. He co-produced the first program on the AIDS epidemic to air nationally on PBS. It won a Peabody Award, broadcasting's equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. Barry also produced Buffett & Gates on Success, a one-hour conversation with Bill Gates and master investor Warren Buffett, which aired nationally on PBS.

Though best known for his work in TV, Barry began his career in newspapers. He worked as a staff reporter and editor at Seattle Weekly for two years and was Northwest correspondent for The Chronicle of Higher Education for five years. He freelanced as a writer for newspapers such as the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Portland Oregonian, and for many magazines including The Nation, Washington Monthly, Oregon Magazine, and Pacific Northwest.

Barry's civic involvement is focused on efforts to enhance the Northwest's economic vitality and civic culture. He is a member of the boards of directors of the Washington Council on International Trade, Citizens for C-SPAN, and Town Hall Association.
